I'm James Honeycutt, an oil painter living and working in San Diego, California.

I paint landscapes, seascapes, and coastlines in oil and cold wax, pushing familiar subjects toward abstraction until something unexpected surfaces. My work is about the moment just before recognition... the catch of light on water, the weight of fog over a hillside, the particular silence of a place that asks you to slow down and look.

I paint in impasto, building texture into the surface until the painting has a physical presence of its own. The magic, when it works, is that you feel a place before you understand it.
