Revealing magic in light and paint...

I'm James Honeycutt, an oil painter living and working in San Diego, California.

I paint landscapes, seascapes, and coastlines in oil and cold wax — pushing familiar subjects toward abstraction until something unexpected surfaces. My work is about the moment just before recognition: the catch of light on water, the weight of fog over a hillside, the particular silence of a place that asks you to slow down and look.

I paint in impasto, building texture into the surface until the painting has a physical presence of its own. The magic, when it works, is that you feel a place before you understand it.

Currently in the studio completing my first oil and cold wax collection, Coastal Textures: Big Sur and Beyond. Join the list for first access.

"I am grateful to have a couple of James' paintings in my home. The way he develops each piece with a different story and such attention to detail is amazing. His creative process brings rich textures and colors to life in his paintings. Jim's art and creative talent is soul moving. I love being able to enjoy the beauty of his paintings every day! "
