Stillness

This piece has heavy texture in places. This texture comes from building up heavy layers of paint, which provides a rich history for the piece, not all of which is always visible. The piece is finished with a coat of satin varnish, which helps protect the painting over time. The painting has a satin finish. This piece is ready to hang. A certificate of authenticity is included with the piece in an envelope.

I painted this intuitive piece quickly. I used a monochrome palette, with white for the highlights, ultramarine blue for the mid tones, and Payne’s gray for the shadows. I added a smidge of pink at the horizon line to suggest a distant sunrise or sunset. I painted this entirely using small scraps of blue shop towel. The paper towel gives tremendous control over application. It’s almost as tactile as painting with my fingers, but it allows me to smooth and blend the paint in a way that fingers couldn’t do. I love how its soft coolness emerged as I wiped shades of blue across the canvas, unsure of what I was even making until it told me. I also love how the trees show both texture and softness at the same time. I’m interested in creating liminal spaces that evoke a sense of wistfulness, even loneliness. I definitely feel that in this space.
