I’ve always admired artists who can create loose desert paintings full of fat, chunky brushstrokes. This piece was my first attempt at that style. I used a large square brush and tried to keep the strokes fat and square for the most part. I debated along the way whether or not to leave little bits of white between some of the strokes; I wasn’t sure whether that would help define the edges between elements or just be distracting, so I left some in and covered up others. Jury is still out on which I prefer. One thing that I LOVE about this piece is how the sky turned out. I wasn’t sure if heavy chunky brushstrokes would work there, but I went for it with some pink. The pink felt like too much, it was competing with the cliff faces, so I added some transparent mixing white on top of parts of it, focusing mostly on the lower parts next to the cliff. The brush I used had a smidge of yellow left on it from some previous strokes, so the clouds ended up a more creamy color that I actually like better than the pure white I started to go for.
