I mostly used charcoal powder to make this piece, which is ground very fine. You actually have to wear a mask while you use it to protect yourself. I used charcoal sticks to make the darkest areas and added a thin layer of white chalk across the surface of the water and in the sky. My favorite thing about painting with charcoal is that you add all highlights with... AN ERASER! You basically erase away the dark parts to reveal the highlights. I use 2 types of erasers, one is a gummy eraser that can be molded into any shape, while the other is a pencil with eraser where the lead should be. That one lets you erase with a tip the width of a pencil lead, which makes it feel like you’re drawing in the highlights, except it’s the other way around. I love this and feel very inspired by this medium.
